Research Associate – Artefacts of Encounter

A Research Associate is being sought for a three-year project. Through historic artefact collections, ‘Artefacts of Encounter’ will study encounters between European explorers and Polynesian islanders on more than thirty Pacific voyages from 1765 to 1840, and their contemporary legacies.
The appointee will conduct research in museum collections and in the Pacific, and will assist with the practical organization of the project, including the production and editing of major publications. He/she will be involved in conference organisation, and exhibition development, and will contribute content to the project’s dedicated digital research environment.
The appointee must hold a doctorate in anthropology or a related discipline; should have conducted research in the Pacific, preferably in Polynesia; should have worked with art and material culture collections and have experience of working in a museum; and must possess good organisational skills. Also highly desirable, a high level of proficiency in French and some editorial experience.
